Bitwarden is the best free option by a significant margin, with full-featured open-source clients. 1Password leads on team and family features. Dashlane has the most polished UX. Yes — significantly safer than reusing passwords. All reputable password managers use zero-knowledge encryption, meaning the company cannot see your passwords even if their servers are breached. Your master password never leaves your device in unencrypted form. The LastPass 2022 breach is often cited — but their architecture meant encrypted vaults were leaked, not plaintext passwords.
1Password if you want the best UX, team features, and can pay $3/mo. Bitwarden if you want free unlimited passwords, open-source verification, or are on a tight budget. Both use strong AES-256 encryption and have been independently audited. For most individuals, Bitwarden free is sufficient.
A passphrase — four or more random words — is stronger and more memorable than a short complex password. "correct-horse-battery-staple" is effectively uncrackable. Avoid any real phrase or lyrics. Enable two-factor authentication on your password manager account regardless of master password strength.
Yes, on both iOS and Android. You set the password manager as your default autofill provider in system settings. 1Password and Bitwarden both handle app autofill reliably across Android and iOS. Browser extension autofill on desktop is slightly more reliable than mobile for all platforms.
With zero-knowledge managers like 1Password and Bitwarden, you cannot recover your data without the master password or an emergency recovery kit — by design. 1Password issues a Secret Key (34-character code) during setup to prevent server-side brute force. Store both securely offline. Dashlane offers optional SMS-based account recovery if you lose your password.
How these scores are calculated
Password manager scores are based on published security audits (Cure53, Insight Risk Consulting), official pricing pages, cross-platform support documentation, free tier limits as of 2026, and feature comparisons from PCMag, Wirecutter, and official documentation. Security scores reflect audit depth, zero-knowledge architecture verification, breach history, and two-factor authentication options.
