How we build these stacks

Most "best tools for X" advice online is a list of individual product reviews — it tells you the best hosting provider and the best database in isolation, but not whether they actually fit together or what the combined bill looks like once you've picked five separate vendors. The Stack Builder solves that by pre-assembling combinations of tools across categories (hosting, database, payments, email, auth, monitoring, and more) into a single recommendation scoped to a specific use case.

Every tool in every template comes from our main scoring database — the same radar scores and dimension breakdowns used on individual review and comparison pages. A template isn't a sponsored bundle; it's the highest-scoring combination of tools for that job once price, reliability, and developer experience are weighed together. If a component tool gets rescored or a stronger alternative appears in its category, the template updates to reflect that.

The estimated monthly cost shown for each stack is calculated from the minimum paid tier of every included tool — a conservative, worst-case number. Because most categories (hosting, database, email, auth) have a generous free tier at low volume, many builders run a full stack for $0–5/month until they have real traffic to justify upgrading.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Stack Builder choose which tools to recommend?

Each stack template is assembled from the highest-scoring tools in our database for that specific use case, weighted by the dimensions that matter most for the job — reliability and pricing for a solo SaaS stack, deliverability and DX for a content site, uptime and support SLAs for agency work. We update a template whenever one of its component tools is rescored.

Is the estimated monthly cost accurate?

The cost shown is the starting price across the minimum paid tier of each tool in the stack. Most components have a free tier, so your actual cost is often lower than the estimate — the number is a worst-case starting point, not a guarantee. Always check the official pricing page for the current rate before committing.

Can I swap out one tool in a recommended stack?

Yes. Each stack is a starting point, not a fixed bundle. Click through to any individual tool's review page to see its full scorecard and compare it against alternatives in the same category — then mix and match based on what you find. The radar chart on each tool page makes it easy to see if a substitute is a net upgrade or downgrade.

What if none of the templates match my project?

Use the "Request a bespoke recommendation" link below the use-case selector. Describe what you're building and we'll suggest a stack tailored to your specific requirements rather than forcing you into one of the preset templates.

How often are stack templates updated?

We review templates whenever a component tool's score changes meaningfully, when a tool is deprecated or acquired, or when a clearly better alternative emerges in a category. Stacks are not static — the goal is to reflect what we'd actually recommend today, not what was true when the template was first published.
