Email marketing platforms let you build a subscriber list, design campaigns, and send automated sequences — all with open rate and click tracking built in. The right tool depends entirely on how sophisticated your automation needs to be.
MailerLite, Mailchimp, and Kit (formerly ConvertKit) look similar on the surface but serve different audiences. Mailchimp is the most recognised brand but has become expensive relative to its feature set. Kit dominates the creator economy. MailerLite offers the best value for small businesses. The scores below reflect our independent analysis across list management, automation depth, deliverability, and price.

I want the best value under $20/mo

Industry average is 20–25% across sectors. B2B lists and niche newsletters often hit 30–50%. Below 15% suggests deliverability issues or a mismatched audience. Open rates have been less reliable since Apple Mail Privacy Protection (2021) inflates opens — focus on click rate instead.
MailerLite for most small businesses and newsletters: more generous free plan, automation included in free tier, and roughly half the price of Mailchimp at equivalent list sizes. Mailchimp makes sense if you need its specific integrations or are already embedded in the HubSpot/Intuit ecosystem.
Yes — significantly. Using a dedicated sending domain with proper SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records is the single biggest deliverability lever. All major platforms support custom sending domains; the setup takes about 20 minutes and prevents your campaigns from landing in spam.
Automation lets you send emails based on subscriber behaviour rather than manually pressing send. Welcome sequences, abandoned cart emails, post-purchase follow-ups, and birthday campaigns are all automations. Most platforms include visual builders — MailerLite and Kit are the easiest to learn.
Kit has added commerce features (digital product sales, tips) and Shopify integration, but it's primarily designed for content creators and newsletters. For a product-heavy e-commerce business, Klaviyo or ActiveCampaign will give you better purchase segmentation and revenue tracking.
How these scores are calculated
Email marketing scores are based on official pricing pages (at 1,000 subscriber benchmark), published deliverability benchmarks from EmailToolTester and Litmus, automation feature comparisons from official documentation, and free plan limits as of 2026. Deliverability scores reflect inbox placement rates across major providers (Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail) from published third-party tests.
